How to Hang Silk, Cashmere and Wool Without Shoulder Bumps or Clip Marks
مشاركة

The short answer is not simply "buy a better hanger." Some garments should be hung on a properly shaped hanger; others should not be hung at all. The right method depends on how the fabric is constructed, how heavy the garment is, and where its weight is being supported.
This guide explains how to make that decision — and how to prevent shoulder bumps, stretching and clip marks before they appear.
The Five Rules to Remember
- Fold cashmere sweaters and most other knitwear.
- Hang woven silk garments only when they are structurally sound and not heavily embellished.
- Hang woven wool coats, jackets and trousers on shaped hangers that support the garment's natural form.
- Use padded clips on a reinforced waistband or side-seam area, not on a thin, unsupported section of fabric.
- Never put a damp garment into the closet.
The important distinction is usually not silk versus wool — it is woven versus knitted, followed by the garment's weight and construction.
| Garment | Best Everyday Storage |
|---|---|
| Silk blouse or structured silk dress | Hang on a smooth, shaped hanger |
| Bias-cut silk dress | Store flat when possible |
| Heavily beaded silk garment | Store flat |
| Cashmere sweater or cardigan | Fold |
| Wool sweater | Fold |
| Woven wool blazer or coat | Hang on a shaped or padded hanger |
| Wool trousers | Hang from a padded bar or padded clips |
| Wool or silk skirt | Hang from reinforced waistband using padded clips |

A garment hanging in a closet is supported by a surprisingly small area. On a thin hanger, much of the garment's weight rests on two narrow points near the ends. Gravity continues pulling downward while those two points push upward — over time, the fabric can take on the shape of the hanger.
This is most obvious in knitwear because knitted loops can move and stretch more readily than a tightly woven structure. A cashmere sweater may be light, but its entire body and sleeves still pull on the shoulder area when it hangs vertically.
Textile-conservation guidance follows the same basic principle. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends wide, rounded and cushioned supports because they spread a garment's weight more evenly across the shoulders.
The hanger should support the garment's shape, rather than asking the garment to conform to the hanger.
Should You Hang Silk?

Sometimes — but not automatically. A well-constructed silk blouse, shirt or lightweight tailored dress can usually be hung if the hanger is smooth, correctly sized and free from sharp edges. However, "silk" describes the fibre, not the construction of the garment. Two silk dresses may need completely different storage methods.
Silk garments that can usually be hung
- Woven silk shirts and blouses
- Lightweight, lined silk jackets
- Structured dresses in good condition
- Garments with sound shoulder seams
- Pieces without heavy beading or concentrated decoration
Silk garments that are better stored flat
- Bias-cut silk dresses
- Heavily beaded or embroidered garments
- Vintage or weakened silk
- Dresses with a heavy skirt and a very light bodice
- Garments with damaged shoulder seams
- Extremely delicate, sheer pieces that distort under their own weight
Should You Hang Cashmere?

For long-term storage, the answer is usually no. Cashmere sweaters are knitted garments. When hung conventionally, the weight of the body and sleeves pulls downward from the shoulders — producing both pointed shoulder bumps and gradual lengthwise stretching.
The Woolmark Company's guidance is simple: hang woven wool garments and fold knits.
How to fold and store cashmere correctly
- Make sure the cashmere is completely dry.
- Lay it face down on a clean surface.
- Fold the sleeves gently across the back.
- Fold the sides inward without compressing the fabric.
- Fold the lower half upward once.
- Store on a shelf or in a drawer with enough room that it is not crushed.
What About Wool Coats, Blazers and Trousers?
Structured wool coats and blazers are designed to hold a three-dimensional shape. Folding them can introduce unwanted creases in lapels, linings and shoulder construction. These garments are generally better stored on a shaped hanger.
Choose a hanger that follows the natural slope of the shoulders, reaches close to but not beyond the shoulder seam, has rounded rather than sharp shoulder ends, is strong enough to support the garment without bending, and has a smooth surface that will not catch the lining.
How Do You Prevent Clip Marks on Skirts and Trousers?

Clip marks are caused by concentrated pressure. A narrow bare-metal clip presses the garment between two small surfaces — if the fabric is soft, thin or left in place for a long time, the pressure may leave a dent, shine or visible outline.
The safest place to position clips
Place clips on a reinforced waistband, the inside face of the waistband, a side-seam area with multiple fabric layers, or an area covered by a belt when the garment is worn.
Avoid clipping a single layer of delicate silk, decorative trim, pleats, velvet pile, embroidery, beading, an elastic waistband, or a visibly worn section of fabric.
Test delicate fabrics first
- Test the clip on a hidden section of the waistband.
- Leave it in place for 15–30 minutes.
- Remove it and check the fabric in natural light.
- If an outline remains, move the clips to a reinforced area or use another storage method.
A Five-Minute Closet Test
Take one valuable garment from your closet and check the following: Does the hanger end before, at or beyond the shoulder seam? Does the surface feel smooth with no rough edges? Is the garment centred? Are the clips clean with no exposed metal? And does the garment have enough room to hang without being compressed against its neighbours?
For museum costume storage, the Canadian Conservation Institute recommends keeping hanging garments at least 10 cm apart. A home closet does not always allow museum spacing, but the principle is valuable.
Can Existing Shoulder Bumps Be Fixed?

Sometimes. If the fabric has only been temporarily distorted, moisture and gentle reshaping may help the fibres return to position.
- Check the care label.
- Lightly dampen the raised shoulder area or use gentle steam from a safe distance.
- Lay the sweater flat.
- Smooth and reshape the shoulder with your hands.
- Allow it to dry completely while lying flat.

Is a wooden hanger safe for silk?
A smooth, correctly sized wooden hanger can be suitable for a modern, structurally sound silk blouse or dress. Check that the wood is fully finished, with no splinters, rough joints or exposed edges. The shape and finish matter more than the material name alone.
Are velvet hangers better for silk?
Velvet-covered hangers provide useful grip, especially for wide-necked blouses and slippery straps. However, very thin velvet hangers may still concentrate pressure at the shoulders. For a structured silk garment, look for both grip and adequate shoulder support.
Can cashmere be hung overnight?
One night is unlikely to ruin a sound sweater, but folding is still the safer habit. The risk increases with heavier, looser knits and when the garment is damp. Never hang wet cashmere — water adds weight, making the knit more likely to stretch.
Should wool trousers be hung from the waistband or the hem?
Both methods can work. Hanging from a reinforced waistband keeps the trousers upright and is convenient for daily use. Hanging tailored trousers from the hem can allow their own weight to help preserve the crease, but the clips must be clean, evenly positioned and sufficiently padded.
Why do clip marks sometimes look shiny?
Pressure can flatten the surface texture of the fabric, changing the way it reflects light. The effect is especially visible on dark wool, velvet and fabrics with a pronounced nap. Use padded clips and place them on a reinforced or hidden area.
Should clothes be stored in dry-cleaning bags?
Not for long-term storage. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises against ordinary plastic garment bags because they provide limited air circulation and can allow moisture to accumulate. A clean, breathable cotton or muslin cover is a better option.
How should silk and wool be stored between seasons?
Clean garments before storage — food residue, perspiration and body oils can attract pests or become harder to remove over time. Make sure every item is completely dry. Fold knitwear, support appropriate woven garments on shaped hangers, and store everything in a cool, dry, dark and ventilated area.
The Bottom Line
Hang Structured Wovens. Fold Flexible Knits.
"Support delicate fabrics where they are strongest."
Your clothes do not need museum storage conditions. But borrowing a few principles from textile conservators — proper support, even weight distribution, clean storage and enough space — can help silk, cashmere and wool keep their shape for much longer.
